TESTIMONIALS

Scott made the process so much easier for me. I had multiple injuries over time and he was able to help me understand the process and guide me through the workers' comp system with the best results I could have expected. My coworkers agree that having Cardinal Point Advisors on board is one of the most valuable services our union offers.

I just wanted to say how important Scott Sorensen at Cardinal Point has been helping me through the workers comp process the last 2 years. I’m glad we have these resources at our disposal.

I went to Kaiser Occ Med for what turned out to be a broken hand. Fortunately, I called Scott while I was filling out the workers' comp paperwork prior to going to the doctor. He provided me with my third party administrator's guidelines for approving medical treatment and great ideas to talk to the doctor about. When the doctor at Kaiser saw that I had the guidelines and was asking good questions, she shifted gears. I received much more thorough care from her and the orthopedic specialist. It was clear that when the doctors knew that Scott was watching over my care, they pulled out all the stops and made sure I had everything I needed. I have no doubt that had I gone in there on my own, without Scott's advice, the level of care would have been much lower. I can't recommend Scott and Cardinal Point Advisors highly enough. He should be a mandatory part of every injured first responder's team.

I wouldn't be here without my team's help and guidance, and you are a very important part of that team! I have tried to advocate to my co-workers the importance of reporting injuries, regardless of how minor they may seem, and to call you, without hesitation, if they have any questions at all. I can't begin to thank you enough for all that you have done for me personally and all that you do for the firefighters still on the line. You will NEVER know who truly grateful I am. I will keep you updated on my journey because I'm sure I'll be reaching out when it comes to settlement time.

I recently entered the abyss that is workers comp due to an injury. Thankfully my bargaining group had retained Cardinal Point Advisors as a benefit for its members. Scott’s prior experience navigating the WC process, knowledge of the injured workers rights and familiarity with health care and legal professionals, helped me assemble a team whose sole goal was to restore my health and quality of life. He enabled me to be my own best advocate and restored some normalcy during a very stressful time. Cardinal Point Advisors provide a very valuable service at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend them for any injured worker.

I felt like I was all alone with a work-related psychological injury. Calling Scott was literally the best phone call I have made in my life. He was able to clarify a situation that was complicated and murky. I immediately felt better after our call and now have a simple and clear path toward treatment and recovery. I can't recommend Cardinal Point Advisors highly enough!! San Jose Firefighter

Having an injury that could end you career can be very scary. I feel very fortunate and grateful to know Scott and have him on my side. From day one with Scott he reassured me that he would get me through the labyrinth of workers comp. He was patient and explained each detail of the process. It is because he knows what its like to be in our shoes. That kind of experience is invaluable. When a denial or other circumstance popped up, I was able to confer with Scott and he knew what would happen or how to handle it. This made for a smooth experience on my end. Overall, Scott and his team provided me with the information and reassurance to successfully make it through this crazy process. I had two prosthetic cervical discs placed in my neck. I am better today, than I could've imagined. It came down to this, from day one Scott knew exactly who I needed to see and how to get there. I couldn't ask for a better person to work with. Thank you for your kind and professional service. There is no one more committed to protecting us than Scott!

I want to thank you for helping me through this difficult process. You made it easy on me and I feel I received the best care possible because of your assistance. So after 2 discs being replaced and a few weeks of recovery I feel pretty good! And I know I'm on track to full recovery. Thanks again for your time and patience, it really meant a lot to me and my family.

Thank you for your help and all the information the other day. I feel like you did more in one day than has happened the whole time I have been off.

You are a great resource! I appreciate the quick responses and knowledge you provide. The WC system isn't very good and every association/union should join your service. I couldn't imagine doing this research without you Cardinal Point. Thank you

The Workers Comp world is very difficult to navigate without a competent guide. Scott Sorenson can provide you with the guidance you need. As a 1st Responder (Fire Captain) Scott has first hand experience of the rigors that a career in public safety entails. I wish I had Scott's advice earlier in my career. I thought that after having my injury determined to be job related by a QME (don't be fooled...nothing is presumptive!), I would be covered for future time lost! However, I have recently been denied 4850 benefits because my original injury was over 5 years prior....even though, over the same 5 years, I have had numerous medical procedures related to the original injury, always returning to duty as soon as possible.. The City you work for, their Workers Comp adjuster and your department will not be looking out for you! Sorenson will, he has the knowledge & experience to assist you.

I can't be more grateful for the reference I was given from my union representative to reach out to Cardinal Point Advisors. I left my 26 year career with a cup overflowing with the weights of the job. A far cry from the cup that just couldn't be filled enough as a young and growing firefighter. Our careers take a toll on us and Cardinal Point Advisors heard my story, understood and provided options for the sole purpose of providing for my needs. I've done work on the obvious traumas that I can now say result in PTSD. Little did I know, there was so much more tucked away that treatment such as EMDR was able to clear away. The results are baffling when I thought certain memories would simply give me brief episodes of discomfort for years to come. After all, they had been doing so for years past. Take it from me, that doesn't need to be so. My hope is that we use these tools offered, do the work necessary to get the help needed, and share the gains with our fellow fire service members and families.

You guys are awesome. Helped me from start to finish with my injury. Appreciate the insight and addressing critical issues that I’ve dealt with.

Cardinal Point has been an invaluable resource to me, helping to put me at ease and better understand the WC process. The ratings of professionals is another invaluable resource, knowing the experience of others to make the best decision. Cardinal Point is a must have service to help with the overwhelming, confusing and scary process that can follow a work related injury. Worth every penny!

I have had serious work-related injuries over the years. When I recently injured my shoulder, I knew I was going to be in for a litany of delays and denials. As expected, I was not receiving the medical care I needed in a timely fashion. Scott got me out of the City’s medical provider and into one of the best orthopedists in the County. I also started to CC Scott on my emails to the Claims Examiner. As soon as I did that, I began to get what I needed right away. One thing I have learned is that you cannot go through this process alone. You need and advocate by your side. Cardinal Point Advisors is the only group that does this. I am very grateful our Association contracted with them and highly recommend them to other public safety Associations.

Thank you guys so much for your help! I feel confident in the process now and what to do going forward.

Cardinal Point Advisors has given me direction, clarity, and advice on the entire WC system and I can not be more thankful. Finally, someone has demystified the dark confusing spiderweb of getting sick or injured at work... also known as the Workman's comp system. Most Firefighters have strong opinions about everything under the sun and many times we joke that you can find an expert in any field or profession at the Fire House dinner table... this is great fun, but not the most effective solution to dealing with a potentially live-altering situation. After almost 20 years on the job, I was diagnosed with Pneumonia, Latent TB, and then pulmonary nodules... I was scared to death thinking that I may be one of the unlucky firefighters that gets lung cancer. As you can imagine, I was filled with fear and confusion on how to deal with this and what protections I needed in place Now for myself and my family if thing were to get worse. Historically, I always relied on the strength of my "Brothers", my Union, and my employer to take care of me if I were to succumb to an injury or illness that was related to my duties as a public servant. I found out immediately that the "brothers" will be there for you emotionally, the union may have some advice... or in my case direct me to Cardinal Point Advisors, but the employer or third party WC administration that the employer contracts with will leave you feeling exposed, vulnerable, and clueless on how and if you will be taken care of and/or protected. I was unaware of how the system worked and was fearful of the cost of an attorney... Did I even need one? Is it worth a consult? should I wait to see what happens? Should I be filling out paperwork that I do not fully understand?...All were question floating through my mind that none of the "fire-house dinner table-attorneys" could answer. After I connected with Cardinal Point Advisors, I was educated on how the system worked and that the cost of a WC attorney is free until (and only if) an award is issued or retirement is granted. This information empowered me to retain an Attorney and take control of the situation... I now had the feeling of security, protection, and knowledge that allowed me to relax, heal, and recover in a way that was much more calming to my family and me. Currently, I am back at work and on the road to recovery... Two QME's later, but would have been completely lost and vulnerable without the help of Cardinal Point Advisors.

Due to an injury that happened to my wife last year, I have had a front row view of the workers compensation system. Unfortunately, I have also learned that there are very limited resources for employees who are struggling with their injury to turn to in order to get information on how to best proceed with dealing with workers compensation representatives. Thankfully, Scott Sorensen was available for me to turn to and ask questions. His knowledge of the system and how it works was immensely helpful in getting my wife both the care she needed as well as the information she needed to best represent herself. More specifically, Scott offered insight on 4850 time, when and why to get an attorney, and about the paperwork mess that exists when dealing with workers compensation companies. Our experience with workers compensation has been exhaustive, as they have tried to manipulate both my wife and her doctors into getting her back to work before her injury has had the time to heal properly or completely. It has been our experience that the only thing important to workers compensation companies is “the bottom line” and they have treated my wife like a number on a spreadsheet instead of a person who has had a life altering injury that happened due to blatant negligence from her employer. I am thankful that Scott was available to offer us some guidance through this process, as neither my wife nor myself had any experience with workers compensation. His insight is directly responsible for many of the positive strides we have made in assuring my wife is properly treated and cared for as she goes through the long recovery process of a work related injury that required surgery.

I was very fortunate to have guidance from Scott Sorensen throughout the duration of my work injury and resulting Workers Comp claim! Without his consulting, there would have been so many unknowns, challenges, and unnecessary frustrations while navigating through the difficult system. Scott was good at preparing me in advance at every step along the way, which was incredibly helpful! I was so much better prepared emotionally to deal with each obstacle. I believe injured workers are at a disadvantage when they don’t know what to expect, and as a result, they are likely to not get the timely treatment they need and deserve after a work injury. Scott has so much experience and knowledge, and he was able to advise me on how to proactively expedite and improve my situation! I know for certain that if I didn’t have input from Scott, the whole process would have been so much more frustrating and upsetting, and it would not have turned out as well as it did! Thankfully, I got the care I needed without giving up, or getting lost in the system. Scott Sorensen is a true advocate for the injured worker!

Cardinal Point Advisors have been a huge help throughout my injury, from the moment I was injured at work to my recovery. I have never been injured at work, so when I tore a muscle on the job, a million thoughts and questions started filling my head. I was scared that I could lose my job. I was scared that I wouldn't be able to provide for my family. I felt lost. I had no idea where to even start. Luckily for me, I had Cardinal Point Advisors step up and show me the way. I was immediately reassured that my job was safe, and my family would be taken care of. Once my mind was at ease, Cardinal Point explained the workers comp process to me. Within an hour of my injury I had all of the necessary paperwork filled out and was on my way to the hospital to get evaluated. Cardinal Point explained to me that getting an MRI as quickly as possible would be very important, and they showed me how to get the MRI without waiting for approval from Workers Comp. I ended up getting an MRI the next day which showed a tear, and had surgery within a week of my injury. The quickness of this process is what helped me to a speedy recovery. Most people think that they will never get injured at work, which is why we rarely think about the process and paperwork involved with a work injury. This is why a resource like Cardinal Point Advisors is so important. They can make sense of a very confusing process and ensure that you get the care that you need in a timely manner. I can't thank Scott and his company enough for giving me guidance in a very difficult situation. ~ Eric Battiato Firefighter Santa Clara Fire Department
